Cassandra Peterson – Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, 1951
Cassandra began with modest beginnings. At 17, she worked as a showgirl in Vegas, and after a conversation with Elvis Presley one evening, her career advanced rapidly. He suggested that she pursue acting and singing in Europe, advice she followed. Eventually, she relocated to Hollywood and, after appearing in a few films, she became known as Elvira. She capitalized on the Elvira persona by creating several films, including “Elvira’s Haunted Hills” and “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.” Most of the earnings from her films were donated to animal charities and HIV/AIDS organizations.
